The circuit of the running light comprises of two integrated circuits (ICs), a resistor, a capacitor and seven light emitting diodes (LEDs). The Decade IC2 scaler ensures that the LEDs light up sequentially. The rate at which this happens is determined by the clock on pin 14. The clock generated by IC1, is organized as an unstable multivibrator. Its frequency is determined by R1-C1. Tactile switches, consisting of two small metal discs, are optional. When switch S1 is in the "off" position, the circuit can be operated by a tactile switch. This also allows the circuit to be used as an electronic dice (in which case the LEDs must be numbered 1 through 6). The position light is powered by a 9 V battery or AC adapter. It consumes no more than 20 mA of current.
